According to Get West London, Brentford are set to receive almost £2m from Andre Gray’s imminent move from Burnley to Watford.

Gray is on the verge of leaving Burnley for Watford in a deal worth £18.5m, according to the Mirror.

Brentford sold the striker to Burnley back in 2015 for a reported £9m, but are now set to receive a windfall from Gray’s next move, due to a 20% sell on clause.

It is believed that the Bees will pocket around £1.9m from any potential deal between the Premier League rivals.

Gray was part of the playing squad at Griffin Park during the 2014/15 campaign, when he scored 17 Championship goals, helping the Bees reach the play-offs in their first season in the second-tier.

The following season Gray continued his fine goalscoring form, scoring twice in the opening two Championship fixtures, before Burnley moved to secure his signature in the summer of 2015.

That season, Gray scored 25 goals combined, with 23 of those coming for Burnley, who he helped win the Championship title and achieve promotion to the Premier League.

The windfall Brentford receive for Gray’s latest move will not be reinvested in the playing squad at Griffin Park, with Dean Smith reportedly happy with the players he has available to him.

Brentford began the Championship campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United.

The Verdict

This is great news for Brentford, who will be pleased to see one of their former players flourishing in the Premier League.

There will be a feeling at Griffin Park that if Brentford had resisted the temptation to sell Gray, they could themselves have been playing in the Premier League and potentially receiving £18.5m for the striker.

However, the majority will be happy with the extra fee received for Gray, although it should be reinvested in the playing squad, to give Brentford the best possible chance of joining their former striker in the Premier League.
