Brentford are set to beat Scottish giants Rangers in the race to sign Peterborough United striker Ivan Toney according to Sky Sports.

Toney has caught the eye with a number of impressive performances for Peterborough in League One during the 2019/20 season, as they narrowly missed out on a top-six finish.

The majority of clubs in the third-tier agreed to finalise league positions based on PPG (points per game), which resulted in Posh dropping out of the play-off places, much to the frustration of their supporters.

Toney scored 26 goals in 39 appearances for Peterborough last season, and it wouldn't have come as a surprise to see him scoop the League One Player of the Year award recently.

His impressive showings haven't gone unnoticed though, with Rangers rumoured to have been interested in signing him ahead of the 2020/21 league campaign.

But it appears as though Brentford have won the race to land his signature, with Sky Sports revealing that a £10million bid has been accepted by the League One club.

It remains to be seen as to what role Toney will have to play for the Bees next season, with his chances of regular first-team football perhaps depending on whether Ollie Watkins remains at the club.

Watkins has been linked with a move to both Aston Villa and Leeds United this summer, although a formal offer is yet to be accepted by Brentford.

The Bees take on Birmingham City in their opening game of the league season, and they'll be eager to get off to a winning start.

The Verdict:

He'll be the ideal replacement for Ollie Watkins if he departs.

Toney has shown that he can score goals, and will be eager to prove a point at a higher level, having failed to make the grade whilst with Newcastle United.

I think Brentford know that they're fighting a losing battle when it comes to keeping Watkins at the club, so it's a smart move by getting his replacement in the squad beforehand.

This could prove to be one of the signings of the season in the Championship.
