The club confirmed on the official website that a left knee injury sustained against Oxford United in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday will now require a surgery to repair his ligament.

The club’s Head of Medical Neil Greig said, "Disappointingly, the news from the last 48 hours is that Andreas will need to undergo surgery to repair a multi-ligament injury to his left knee. The consensus is that such a procedure will take, on average, around nine months to recover from, making his participation this season unlikely. This surgery will take place once the initial inflammation has settled and Andreas is ready to proceed’’.

The 27-year-old was making his debut for the Bees, where he arrived from Dutch side FC Twente for a club-record fee of £2.1 million. His injury was blamed on a dodgy Griffin Park pitch which will now force the postponement of the game against Birmingham on Tuesday to allow a refurbishment.

The Danish international will now join Josh McEachran, Scott Hogan and Lewis Macleod, who have also been sidelined with medium- to long-term injuries.

The latest blow could also keep Bjelland out of Euro 2016 next summer as he will face an uphill battle to regain his fitness ahead of the 2016-2017 season.

Brentford are likely to rely on Jake Bidwell and Yoann Barbet to lead their central defence, with  Anderlecht right-back Maxime Colin adding to the depth of the side.

The Bees began their Sky Bet Championship campaign with a 2-2 draw with Ipswich Town at Griffin Park, and were 2-0 down before clawing it back to 2-2.
