Brentford appear to have beaten Middlesbrough and Queens Park Rangers to the signing of Northampton Town captain, Charlie Goode.

Goode has been in-demand this summer on the back of Northampton’s promotion to League One, but of all the Championship clubs interested in signing the centre-back, it appears Brentford have won the race.

As per Sky Sports’ Transfer Centre (19/08, 10:00), Brentford have agreed a fee with Northampton for the service of Goode, with personal terms close to being agreed and the signing having the potential to be announced later today.

Quiz: Do you remember which club Brentford signed these 15 players from?

Earlier in the summer, Sky reported (29/07, 14:29) that Middlesbrough and QPR saw £500k bids for Goode rejected by Northampton. Brentford’s agreed fee hasn’t been revealed, with Sky noting it as ‘undisclosed’.

Goode excelled for Keith Curle’s side in League Two last season, captaining Northampton into the play-offs.

The 25-year-old made 39 appearances in the league, scoring three goals and registering two assists, but more importantly, provided a defensive rock to manoeuvre the side through the play-offs.

Curle’s side were 4-0 winners over Exeter City at Wembley in the League Two play-offs, whilst in the Championship’s showpiece final, Brentford were beaten by Fulham and are now planning for another crack at promotion.

The Verdict

Brentford have taken time to dust themselves down after play-off heartbreak, but this is a very good signing for them to be making this summer.

Goode was excellent for Northampton last season in League Two and there’s plenty of confidence that he’s got the attributes to step up into the Championship.

Ethan Pinnock and Pontus Jansson will ease his transition, but the 25-year-old will provide Frank with a good alternative to that pair.
