Brentford will be prepared to receive several transfer offers for star striker Neal Maupay this summer but must do all they can to convince him they could challenge for promotion if he were to stay at the club for another season.

Maupay scored 25 league goals last season, only 4 behind the division's top scorer Teemu Pukki and the 22-year-old has been heavily linked with a move away from Griffin Park.

Brentford will face a battle to keep their star man and if an offer in the region of £20 million were to be made they could be convinced to sell. This worked for Norwich last season when they sold James Maddison to Leicester for the same figure as they finished the following season as champions.

However, Norwich invested little of the money they received for Maddison, less than £5 million, and arguably got lucky with free transfer Pukki being the surprise star of the season. Nobody expected the Finnish international to be as successful as he was and it would be difficult for Brentford to replicate that. In addition, they already have a proven Championship goalscorer in Maupay and keeping the striker could prove to be more valuable than losing him.

The Bees finished last season strongly and manager Thomas Frank looked to have got the team playing the way he wanted after initially struggling following the departure of former head coach Dean Smith. Brentford have a promising young squad with Said Benrahma and Ollie Watkins both netting 10 goals in the last campaign and Sergi Canos also scored 7.

The two automatic promotion sides, Norwich and Sheffield United, proved you don't always have to spend big to achieve success in the Championship. Brentford will be competing with the likes of Fulham, West Brom and Middlesbrough who will all likely have bigger transfer budgets. The Bees have been a selling-club in the past, receiving sizeable sums for strikers Andre Gray and Scott Hogan, but this will only get them so far.

If they could convince Maupay to stay at Griffin Park they would be very serious contenders for promotion. However, the bright lights of the Premier League may be too hard for the Bees to fight but if Maupay does leave they must keep hold of the rest of their talented squad.
