Kolbeinn Finsson will join Borussia Dortmund II after he and Brentford agreed a deal with the German club.

The midfielder has agreed terms and will depart Brentford B for an undisclosed fee, having made 45 appearances for the Bees' development team.

The 19-year-old only joined the club last summer and, although he signed a two-year deal, his nine goals, many of which were from long-range, have caught the eye of the German giants.

Dortmund will be the fourth club of Finsson's short career, having previously featured for Fylkir Reykjavík in his native Iceland, as well as Groningen in the Netherlands.

He has made six appearances for Iceland U21s and could have a bright future ahead of him, with Brentford B team Head Coach Neil MacFarlane acknowledging that he was proud to see him join such a prestigious club.

Despite the loss of a good young player, this deal will offer the club encouragement that they are heading down the right path with their academy, and they should soon reap the rewards in terms of players making the step up to the first-team.

The Verdict

Although this is a great deal for Finsson there should be questions raised as to why Brentford have decided to allow such a talented youngster to leave, as it is unlikely the offer was too great to turn down.

Brentford are not in the position where they need funds considering the players they've sold this summer, and with Finsson's potential he could have broken into the first-team.

Finsson's situation hasn't worked out how the club would have planned but at least it shows they are able to attract good young players and improve them, as that will encourage others to join.
