Brentford's chief executive Mark Devlin has admitted that promotion to the Premier League could force the club to look at alternatives to playing at Griffin Park.

The Bees have plans in place to build a modern 20,000 seater stadium at Lionel Road to replace their current home, but work on the £71 million project is unlikely to get underway until the new year, according to Get West London.

The club's aim was to stay at Griffin Park until the new project was completed, but an unlikely burst towards the top end of the Sky Bet Championship has made promotion a real possibility - meaning the suitability of Griffin Park to play host to Premier League games has come under scrutiny.

“Every Championship club has to submit their plans for meeting Premier League rules and we are working on that now," said Devlin, quoted by West London Sport.

“Clubs will be required to put these into action upon promotion so it is not an exercise to be taken lightly.

“Griffin Park falls short of meeting Premier League requirements in some areas.

“In order to complete this document properly we are looking at creative and innovative solutions to meet those requirements. We will submit those ideas to the Premier League, as is required, in January.

“Should we be unable to meet the regulations at Griffin Park, one alternative is to ground share.”

According to West London Sport's article, potential issues with the old stadium include a lack of sufficient floodlighting and undersoil heating as well as insufficient changing room and media facilities.

Devlin went on to say: “If a groundshare is required, the club will consider all stadiums in the local area, both those currently used for football and not.

“I should stress that no conversations have taken place with any other club or third party.

“Club representatives have only spoken to the Football League in order to ensure we complete the document by January 31.”

It's rumoured that rugby stadiums Twickenham and Harlequin's Stoop could be on Brentford's agenda.
