Championship duo Brentford and Blackburn Rovers are both keen on signing Southampton striker Sam Gallagher.

According to a report in the Sun on Sunday (Print edition, Sunday 23rd June 2019), the Bees are now in the race to sign the young striker, although he is thought to prefer a move back to Blackburn where he enjoyed success on loan.

Gallagher has failed to make his mark in the Premier League with the Saints and barring his spell at Ewood Park, his loan spells away from the club have also failed to yield the amount of goals he might have hoped for.

The 23-year-old burst onto the scene for Southampton as a teenager and was thought to be the next big thing to emerge from the academy at St Mary's, but has since struggled to find his best form and has at times, looked far away from being a top Premier League player.

Gallagher now faces a decision this summer over what to do for the best, with his career at a stage where he needs to be getting regular first-team football in order to continue his development and progress.

Tony Mowbray is a known admirer of Gallagher and could be convinced to make a move for the striker, while Brentford will be keeping an eye on potential signings with star man Neal Maupay attracting plenty of attention in the transfer window.

The Verdict

Gallagher is a really strange one I think, as he clearly has some talent and can produce the goods.

However, he's not done it enough, so a move to Blackburn in an environment he was clearly comfortable in might be the way for him.

Brentford on the other hand can surely do better than land the Saints man, especially with their extensive scouting network. He'd definitely be a disappointing signing if he is the one they go with to replace Maupay in the end.
