Brentford are interested in signing Egypt international Sam Morsy from Championship rivals Wigan Athletic, it has been reported.

Morsy has made 120 appearances for Wigan since joining from Chesterfield in January 2016, captaining the side to the League One title last season and Championship safety this year, and Morsy's dominant performances in the centre of the Latics' midfield appear to have attracted interest from elsewhere.

According to West London Sport, Brentford are interested in the Wigan captain, as they look to push on from their mid table finish this season.

Morsy only signed a new contract at the DW Stadium on Christmas Day 2018, keeping him with Wigan until the summer of 2021.

With The Latics having recently seen Reece James return to parent club Chelsea and Nick Powell looking set to move on, after it was reported by The Sun that he had turned down a new contract at the club, it seems unlikely that they will want to let Morsy leave when they do not need to sell the midfielder.

The seven times Egypt international is also thought to be a target for fellow Championship side Sheffield Wednesday.

The verdict

This could be a good signing for Brentford.

The Bees will need to strengthen is they are to push for a top six spot next season, and Morsy would certainly help them to do that.

Morsy's grit and determination in the centre of the park would be a help to Brentford when it comes to grinding out results when Brentford need to throughout the course of the season.
