Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer revealed yesterday that Brentford made an approach to sign Joe Aribo, after the midfielder completed his move to Rangers.

The 22-year-old was a key player for Charlton last season, scoring ten goals and providing five assists for his teammates in 39 appearances in all competitions, as the Addicks won promotion to the Championship.

He also played in all three of Charlton's play-off games, including the dramatic victory against Sunderland in the final at Wembley and scored in the first leg of their semi-final win over Doncaster Rovers.

Aribo completed his move to Rangers earlier this week, signing a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee, just days after Bowyer claimed that a move to Ibrox would be a bad choice for his career.

The Charlton boss has now revealed that Brentford made an approach to sign the midfielder, but Aribo was not told by his agent that the Bees were interested.

Bowyer also claimed that moving to Brentford would have been a better option for his development.

Brentford fans will probably be very disappointed by the news that they have missed out Aribo, as he is a talented footballer and no doubt would have been an important player for them in the Championship next season.

Only time will tell whether it is a mistake for Aribo to move to Rangers or not. They are a massive club, with a great history and a huge fan base, so it is easy to understand why he would be tempted by a move there.

However, maybe he would have been better of staying in the Championship, as it is far more of a competitive league than the Scottish Premiership.

One thing is for certain though, Brentford fans should feel very frustrated by the fact that Aribo was not even told about the interest from the Bees.

That may not have changed his mind, but perhaps he could have been tempted by the possibility of a move to Griffin Park and his agent definitely should have told him.
