Brentford boss rues sloppy goals in Brighton defeat

Brentford head coach Dean Smith admitted that the first goal was the crucial factor in his side’s 3-0 defeat at Brighton on Friday night.

The Bees had begun brightly at the AMEX Stadium as Alan Judge’s early shot was parried by Seagulls goalkeeper David Stockdale before Anthony Knockaert broke the deadlock on 27 minutes.

Further goals from Tomer Hemed and Jamie Murphy condemned the West London outfit to a comfortable away defeat but Smith thought his team were too easily opened up.

He told the club’s official website: “Until the first goal it could have gone either way. We had chances, they had chances, but once they got the goal they were very difficult to break down.

“We had a lot of the ball, didn’t open them up as well as we should, with enough potency up front, but we got counter attacked and got sucker punched.

“The first goal was always going to be important. The second goal was a poor one to give away. In fact, the first two were poor.

“Unfortunately we’ve given sloppy goals away and when you do that you’re always chasing the game.”

Despite the loss, Brentford enjoyed 65 per cent of possession but only managed one shot on target – and Smith said his team need to create and convert more goalscoring opportunities.

“That’s something that we’re trying to work on,” the former Walsall boss added.

“When a team can afford to bank up and break on you, we looked more dangerous in the first 25 minutes.

“Both teams had spells where they could have got a goal but unfortunately the first goal changed it.”

Brentford remain 10th, eight points adrift of the top six, ahead of Saturday’s games and travel to play-off contenders Sheffield Wednesday next weekend.
