Brentford have completed the signing of Barsnley defender Ethan Pinnock on a three-year deal with an option for a further year, the club has confirmed.

The 26-year-old arrives at Griffin Park for a fee believed to be around £3million. This comes after the centre-back impressed during the Tykes' promotion-winning season last term, where he starred at the heart of defence alongside Liam Lindsay.

The pair helped Barnsley achieve the best defensive record in the league last season, but they have now both departed Oakwell with Lindsay joining Stoke.

Pinnock was an ever-present figure in League One last season, and he will now look to fill the void left at Brentford by former Bees centre-back Yoann Barbet who joined QPR this summer.

The former Forest Green man only established himself in the Barnsley side last season, and he was rewarded for his strong performances during the campaign by being named the club's Player of the Year.

Barnsley have already started the hunt for defensive replacements, with Leeds United's Aapo Halme reportedly linked with a move across Yorkshire to join Daniel Stendel's side.

The Verdict

This is a typically impressive signing from Brentford, as Pinnock was one of the leading players in League One last season.

His performances throughout the campaign saw him named in the PFA League One Team of the Season, and I think he would have starred for Barnsley in the Championship next campaign as well.

He is a solid defender and I think he is capable of marshalling Brentford's defence next season, following the departures of Barbet and Chris Mepham over the last six months.

The £3million fee is also good value for money, and I really feel that Barnsley should have tied Pinnock down on a lengthy extension to his Barnsley deal which was only due to run until 2020.
