After Dougie Freedman was relieved of his duties as Nottingham Forest manager in March 2016 the controversial club board began to plot who his replacement would be.

The club gave themselves time to think, allowing Paul Williams to take over as caretaker manager until the end of the season.

Finally, on June 27 2016, the club got their man. Stadde Rennes manager Philippe Montanier.

This is FLW Rewind, where we take a look back at an event in a club's history and compare the initial reaction to the long-term results.

Montanier arrived in the East Midlands with a glowing track record.

The Frenchman had taken Real Sociedad into the Champions League just four years earlier but left Spain for Stade Rennes at the end of the 2012/13 season.

How Forest fans reacted

After announcing the appointment on Twitter the initial reaction was a mixture of bemusement and excitement given his record.

How did things pan out?

In the summer of his appointment, Montanier did not mess around.

He brought in 15 new faces including spending over £1million on Apostolos Vellios and was also the man who brought Nicklas Bendtner to the club on a free transfer.

Oliver Burke was also sold for over £13million to Red Bull Leipzig and Jamie Patterson was shipped off to Bristol City for an undisclosed fee.

Things started well for the new boss, winning four out of six matches in August, but suffering losses to Brentford and Brighton.

Nonetheless, after a 3-1 win against Leeds United, the feeling was still positive heading into September.

Montanier's second month in charge was when things began to unravel. Forest went the whole month without a Championship win, gaining three points from three draws as they slid down the table.

October was even worse with the club losing four out of their five matches meaning the pressure was already beginning to grow on Montanier after just four months in the job.

Two wins out of three in November helped ease the worries of Forest fans, but December saw them pick up just one win and a draw from six matches.

Forest fans wanted their manager out, and they would not have to wait long.

Montanier was sacked after a 0-0 draw away to Birmingham City on January 14 having lost at home to Barnsley and away to Wigan in the FA Cup.

After one more disastrous appointment in Gary Brazil, who was sacked after just two months, Mark Warburton eventually helped the club survive the drop by the skin of their teeth, only staying up on goal difference thanks to a 3-0 win against Ipswich on the final day.
