After years of sustained solid performances, Charlie Wyke has started to attract the attention of Championship clubs.

According to The Bolton News, Bolton Wanderers are looking at launching a £1 million bid to snaffle the Bradford City striker.

As tempting as this sum is, the Bantams should bat it away.

In 2017/18, Wyke reached double figures for league goals for the fourth consecutive season.

His 15 goals and eight assists marked him as top scorer as well as the player involved in the most goals. While Bradford’s play-off challenge died in March, it would not have lasted nearly as long had it not been for the 25-year old.

Given the fee involved, the option to sell Wyke is tempting.

It could be used to invest in a replacement striker as well as help finance reinforcements at the back.

However, the incoming striker would be unlikely to be of Wyke’s quality.

Of the players to score more than him last season, two will be playing in the Championship next season, while the rest have attracted interest from Championship clubs.

Bradford would either need to compete with those clubs or look to convince a Championship striker to make the drop down.

These options would require both a substantial transfer fee and high wages.

Wyke will want to face the challenge of Championship football.

He is good enough. However, for new boss Michael Collins, it is imperative that he holds onto his striker.

If he fails, a play-off challenge may have to be put on hold.
