Swansea City boss Steve Cooper picked up the Manager of the Month award on Friday, with the Swans currently sat top of the league table after the opening six games of the season.

Cooper beat Marcelo Bielsa, Lee Bowyer and Lee Johnson to the award, even though Bowyer has had a hugely impressive start to the season in Charlton's first season back in the Championship.

Football League World's Charlton Athletic fan pundit Robert Smith issued his thoughts on Bowyer missing out on the award, and feels as though the Addicks boss has every right to feel aggrieved.

"Both deserve huge credit for the starts the clubs have had this season, no-one would have predicted they both would be sitting pretty in the top two after the international break with both unbeaten.

"I think Charlton, in particular, have had a remarkable month when you take into consideration bringing in and gelling 15 new players, making that huge step up from League One and working with the lowest budget the division I am sure Bowyer would feel somewhat hard done by."

Some fans have labelled the Manager of the Month as a curse, and Smith did admit that Bowyer not winning the award will sit well with their 'underdog mentality'.

"It oddly suits us perfectly, Bowyer would have certainly welcomed the award as a reflection on the team’s performance this season.

"But it also fits well with our underdog mentality, we are thriving being dismissed by other teams at the moment and were quite happy staying under the radar for as long as possible."

The regular punter felt that Steve Cooper was a worthy winner of the award, and was full of admiration as to how the Swansea boss has coped in testing circumstances over the summer.

"To be honest, I looked at Swansea at the beginning of the season as a team that would be in and around us at the bottom of the table.

"You take into consideration how the budget has been slashed, top players have been sold and no real big investment in the side has followed - couple that with him coming fresh as a new manager out of youth football and you can’t argue he is a worthy winner.

"Can he maintain it? Can Charlton maintain it? Plenty of pundits will still be writing us off, so let’s see if it’s still a top of the table class when the two sides meet next month."
