Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer has delivered a revised verdict of last weekend's disappointing defeat to Blackburn Rovers at The Valley, picking out positives from the loss.

The 2-0 defeat followed a brilliant win away to Nottingham Forest and brought the Addicks crashing back down to earth as they look to avoid relegation to League One.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Thursday, reported by the club's official Twitter account, Bowyer said: “When you don't take chances in this division, you lose games.

QUIZ: How much can you remember about Charlton’s 2020 so far?

"That was the difference last weekend and that’s what we need to improve on.

"When I watched the game back, there were a lot of positives. In the first 20 minutes, we were the better side, but we couldn’t get that goal."

First-half goals from John Buckley and Tosin Adarabioyo were enough to see Tony Mowbray's side take all three points and heap the pressure back onto Charlton ahead of this weekend's Luton Town clash.

Bowyer's side currently sit in 19th place with 33 matches played, just five points clear of the relegation zone and just six ahead of the Hatters, leaving the Valley clash looking rather important.

In fact, it is not just this match which Bowyer will be focusing on. In their next six games, the Addicks play six sides in the bottom half in Luton, Sheffield Wednesday, Huddersfield, Middlesbrough, Hull and QPR.

The verdict

It is good that Bowyer has been able to pick positives from last weekend's defeat.

Many fans get irritated when managers do this, seeing it as them skirting around the real problems, but I don't think that is what Bowyer is doing at all.

He is a very straight talking manager and if he felt there were not any positives, he would have said just that.

It will be very interesting to see how they react to that defeat on Saturday, however, because another loss could see them dragged into real trouble.
