Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer has made his feelings perfectly clear about the proposed move of midfielder Joe Aribo to Rangers.

Aribo, 22, enjoyed a fine season as the Addicks gained promotion to the Championship via the play-offs, scoring 10 goals and recording three assists in 39 league appearances, form that led a host of clubs to clamour for his signature this summer.

Bowyer said to the Daily Record: “I worked so hard to get him to this situation he is in now. It is about progression for him,"

“So it’s a shame if he gets pushed to somewhere where it is not going to benefit him in his football career. If he goes to Rangers that is not the right place for him to go for his football career."

What do you make of Bowyer's comments? Is he right to say what he has?

Tommy Joyce

"While Bowyer's words are strong, you can definitely see where he's coming from.

"It is not up to Bowyer to decide on Aribo's future, but at 22, it could stunt his development - Bowyer is right when he says it is rare that a player from Rangers will make a jump to the Premier League.

"Aribo may be better off going to a better Championship club and playing regularly and playing against opposition which regularly tests himself more than the SPL.

"Apart from really Celtic, Aberdeen and any European opponent, there aren't many teams that can really match Rangers and that could stifle his development."

Kealan Hughes

“Lee Bowyer is understandably aggrieved that Aribo chose to move elsewhere, and it could prove to be a bad move if the midfielder doesn’t get the game time he desires.

“That is the key factor, at Charlton Bowyer would have built the team around him and made him the key man, he would have started games regularly in the Championship whereas at Rangers he will have to prove himself and a few bad games could see him completely out of the squad.

“However, Aribo no doubt believes in his ability and he should be one of the best players in the division next year. Working for Steven Gerrard - a top player who played in the same position as Aribo - will do him the world of good and he should hit the ground running.

“Added to that, Rangers is a huge club and they can also offer European football. They also offer the opportunity to win trophies which Charlton cannot - and if Aribo leads Rangers to their first title since 2011 he will be remembered there for some time.”

George Brooks

"I think there's an element of risk for Aribo in his decision to move to Rangers, but it's way to early to say whether it's a mistake or not.

"This is something that will become more clear in time.

"Aribo could be an important player for Rangers next season, but if he doesn't get a proper chance at Ibrox next season, then you could argue that it's a mistake.

"The 22-year-old is a talented player and he probably would have been one first names on the teamsheet for Charlton in the Championship next season.

"You have to say that the Championship is much more of a competitive league than the Scottish Premiership, so perhaps it would have been better for Aribo's development to remain at Charlton.

"It's a real blow for Charlton to lose a player of his quality and potential, so I can definitely understand why Bowyer is both frustrated and disappointed with his decision to leave the club."
