It has been a bit of a bizarre season for Brentford, impressing hugely in stages, but falling flat during others.

They sat inside the top-six under Dean Smith throughout the opening two months of the season before he was poached by Aston Villa in October.

Thomas Frank took over, with the transistion stage causing the Bees to plummet down the table, although the German now appears to have his side firing again.

A key player throughout the campaign has been striker Ollie Watkins.

His partner Neal Maupay has often stolen the headlines, but with nine goals and eight assists, Watkins has been catching the eye as well.

Before the campaign had even started he was being linked with Premier League Bournemouth and then in January Southampton were also interested in him.

With Brentford not likely to be going down or up this season, they can expect a lot of interest from other clubs this summer, as well.

Here, then, are three potential paths his career could follow…

Stick with Brentford

At 23, Watkins should be in no rush.

Griffin Park is a place where he will be able to play first-team football in a side whose style suits him down to the ground.

He needs to be careful.

Push for Southampton

The Saints could be a good place for him to go as well.

They are a club who have a habit of giving young English talents a turn in recent years and Watkins could be the next.

However, whether Hassenhutl’s style will suit him is another matter.

Push for Bournemouth

This would be the best move for him.

Yes, he would have a lot of competition at the Vitality, but the way Eddie Howe plays would be very suited to Watkins.

He has shown with David Brooks as well that he is more than willing to give EFL recruits a fair shot.
