Boss reveals ‘impossible’ Aston Villa snub

Christophe Galtier has revealed the reason he rejected a chance to manage Aston Villa last season, reports the Telegraph.

The Saint-Etienne boss faces English opposition this week, as his side play Manchester United in the Europa League on Thursday as they look to progress past Jose Mourinho’s Red Devils.

Galtier was linked with the Villa post, following Tim Sherwood’s sacking in October 2015, and revealed to the Telegraph why he rejected a chance to take over at Villa Park:

“It was not because it was a bad season for Aston Villa.”

“It was because it was during the season. After I spoke to Aston Villa I was attracted to go to England. But I did not want to leave during the season and leave the club here in difficulty. I respected that and it was the right thing to do. It was impossible for me to leave.”

Villa eventually appointed Remi Garde as the club’s manager, though eventually suffered relegation to the Sky Bet Championship later that season.

Now, they are struggling to adapt to life in the second-tier, with Steve Bruce now the club’s manager, they find themselves 16th in the Championship table.

The club were tipped heavily for an instant promotion back to the Premier League under Roberto Di Matteo, but the Italian lost his job to Bruce in October.

Villa are in action this evening as they take on Barnsley at Villa Park, having lost six of their last seven games.
