Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham says that Sunderland have made a great appointment with the recruitment of Kristian Speakman as their new sporting director.

It was announced on Friday that Speakman is set to take up that new role behind the scenes at the Stadium of Light as part of looks to be becoming on off-the-field rebuild for Sunderland, with the Black Cats expected to announce Lee Johnson as their new manager imminently.

Speakman has left his role at Birmingham City – which he had held for the last 14 years – in order to take that new position at Sunderland, meaning Bellingham is well-placed to comment on the appointment, having come through the youth ranks with the Blues, enjoying an outstanding campaign in their senior side last season before joining Dortmund as a 17-year-old in the summer.

Now it seems as though Speakman has indeed left a positive impression on Bellingham, judging by his reaction to his latest career move.

Taking to Twitter to gives his thoughts on Speakman move to Sunderland, Bellingham described Sanderson as a “great signing”, pointing out how much he has done for a number of players during his career so far, and revealing he expects the Black Cats’ new sporting director to do just that.

The Verdict

This does look to be a really good sign for Sunderland.

When you look at the success Bellingham has enjoyed, and the part he clearly seems to feel Speakman has played in that, it does seem as though Sunderland’s new sporting director could provide a lift for the Black Cats current playing squad, particularly those coming through the youth ranks.

Given the someone what difficult situation the club finds itself in at the minute, that will no doubt be a relief for those associated with the Black Cats, and it is also good to see Bellingham returning the favour with regards to giving support to those who have helped him in the past.
