Queens Park Rangers full-back Angel Rangel is closing in on a return to the R's first-team after getting a 45-minute run-out in a development game today.

West London Sport revealed how the former Swansea man made his return in a relatively strong side that went down 3-2 to Southampton, with former player Charlie Austin scoring for the Saints.

Geoff Cameron, who is also returning from a long lay-off, Pawel Wszolek, Jordan Cousins and Josh Scowen were some other senior men to be involved.

Rangel hasn't played since he injured his thigh against Leeds in December and it came at just the wrong time for the 36-year-old who was really impressing for Steve McClaren's side.

After joining earlier in the campaign on a short-term deal, the experienced defender managed to get himself a new deal until the end of the season following his impressive performances.

Therefore, he will know he is playing for another contract in the final eight games, with McClaren sure to be assessing Rangel closely.

The Verdict

This is very good news for QPR as Rangel was playing extremely well before his injury.

Not only was he making key contributions, including those two goals at Stoke, but he is also an experienced head in a young team.

So, it's a major boost for McClaren who has seen his side endure a very tough run of form which includes seven defeats in their last ten league fixtures.
