Bolton Wanderers captain Jason Lowe has revealed that the Trotters squad have not yet been asked to take a wage cut or deferral but has suggested the topic will be breached in the future.

All EFL fixtures have been suspended until at least the 30th of April due to the Covid-19 pandemic, though at this point it seems as if the delay may stretch on far longer than that.

The current circumstances have caused financial issues for clubs up and down the country.

Many have had to take action with Leeds United agree wage deferrals for senior management, players and coaches, and Huddersfield Town's board following suit.

Speaking to the Bolton News, Lowe revealed that discussions over such actions have not been had involving the players at the North West club thus far.

He said: "It’s a hurdle we will have to negotiate at some point in time.

“At the moment we have been paid as normal for March and until we are asked or told otherwise that we need to start thinking outside the box with the money available to the club then there isn’t a decision to make.

“If and when there is something to address, I am sure we will make the right decisions for the football club, for ourselves and our families and I am sure as a group we will sit down and discuss it sensibly.

'I don’t know the financial position of other people – and so I can’t speak for everyone – but I read what is happening at other clubs and it’s a horrendous situation.

“If what I read is right, there have been reductions at Leeds United and there has some friction at one of my old clubs, Birmingham City.

“But I think as players we have to appreciate there is a much, much bigger picture at play here and be smart.”

Bolton have had more than their fair share of off the field and financial issues over the past few years or so.

They started the season with a 15-point deduction as a result of those issues and now look on track to suffer a second consecutive relegation and drop down to League Two.

The Verdict

This is a huge talking point at the moment, so it is useful to hear the Bolton captain speaking on the topic.

His stance appears to be that he would be open to wage deferrals or cuts.

You'd imagine that as the delay wears on, the club will have to prepare to take precautionary financial measures and it seems from Lowe's comments that the club will be ready to accept them.

It will be interesting to see how this develops and if the Trotters follow in the footsteps of the likes of Leeds soon.
