The 21-year-old had been at Plymouth Argyle on loan, before returning to Bolton and made his first appearance for them on Tuesday night, during a 4-2 defeat to Rotherham United.

Kellett started attracting attention down in League Two with a solo goal against Northampton Town. He dribbled past four or five players, drifting across from the left wing and beat the keeper with a cute finish.

The 21-year-old will be assessed by Manchester United and Louis Van Gaal during his time there, before making a decision to activate a clause to sign him permanently the end of the season.

His manager at Bolton, Neil Lennon, told the press: “It’s a great opportunity for Andy. We called about Saidy and Manchester United asked for him to go the other way. He thought it was a wind-up.

“He hadn’t got a clue. He was on his way to Plymouth. It took a good five or 10 minutes – he wouldn’t believe us. We told him to ring his father and we’d tell him, and once that happened I think it started to sink in. It’s a great story but now he’s got to knuckle down and learn.

“It’s great for the kid. It’s an opportunity for him regardless of what happens. He’s no bother, low maintenance, very level-headed and I just hope he takes it in his stride.”

He was Manchester United's only signing of the January window, after they had targets such as Memphis Depay, Aymeric Laporte and Matts Hummels. Van Gaal decided to move for his man after Bolton enquired over the availability of Saidy Janko on loan.

Bolton have made an impressive rise from the relegation zone since Neil Lennon's arrival, and are now 14th on 34 points.
