It's fair to say that Bolton Wanderers have endured a tough few seasons, and their memories of playing their football in the Premier League will feel like a distant memory.

The Trotters are currently playing their football in the fourth-tier of English football, and are five points adrift of league-leaders Cheltenham Town heading into their final ten matches of this year's campaign.

The club have had their fair share of signings over the years that have made a positive impact at the University of Bolton Stadium, and they've certainly justified some of the hefty prices that have been paid for their services.

We take a look at Bolton Wanderers' top-ten most expensive signings, and see what they're up to nowadays.

Find out who kicks us off at number ten, on the next page....

David N'Gog is the first name on the list at number ten, with the former Bolton Wanderers forward signing for the club for a fee of £4.05million.

The Frenchman spent three years at the University of Bolton Stadium, and scored 16 goals in 91 appearances for the Trotters, before departing in favour of a move to Swansea City in January 2014.

N'Gog's career took an interesting turn after that though, as he went on to play for the likes of Reims, Panionios and Scottish side Ross County.

But he moved to Lithuanian side FK Žalgiris in February 2020, but retired from his playing career at the end of the 2019/20 season.

Matthew Taylor is next up, with the former Bolton Wanderers man signing for the club for a fee of £4.23million.

Taylor arrived at the club in 2008 after an impressive spell with Portsmouth. He went on to make 138 appearances for the Trotters, and scored 23 goals in total for them, before leaving in 2011, as he moved to West Ham United.

He later went on to have spells with Burnley and Northampton Town, before moving to Swindon Town in 2017.

That is where Taylor's last spell as a player was, as he called time on his playing career at the end of the 2018/19 season whilst with the Robins.

Zat Knight is level with Taylor on the list, with the former Bolton Wanderers defender signing for the Trotters from Aston Villa for a fee of £4.23million.

The defender spent five years with Bolton, and made 191 appearances in total for the club, before departing in 2014, as he went on to sign for Colorado Rapids in the USA.

Knight's stay in America was a brief one though, as he left the club after just one season with the club. Knight then went on to sign for Berkshire-based Reading, but made just two appearances for them in 2015.

He only signed a short-term contract with the Royals, but it wasn't renewed at the end of the season, in what proved to be his last spell in his playing career.

El-Hadji Diouf is seventh on the list, with the former Bolton striker signing for the club from Liverpool for a fee of £4.32million.

Diouf went on to score 24 goals in 134 appearances for the Trotters, before going on to sign for Sunderland in 2008, which brought an end to a three-year spell at the University of Bolton Stadium.

Diouf played for the likes of Blackburn Rovers, Doncaster Rovers and Leeds United later down the line, where he didn't score consistent goals for either team.

The forward finished his playing career in Malaysia with Sabah F.C. in 2015, after one year with the club.

Dean Holdsworth is next up, with the former Bolton Wanderers forward arriving for a fee of £4.38million.

He arrived from Wimbledon in the 1997/98 season, and went on to make over 70 appearances for the club, before departing in 2003 after six years with the club.

Holdsworth went on to return to Wimbledon shortly after he left Bolton, before going on to play for the likes of Derby County and Weymouth.

He went on to call time on his playing career after a spell with Redbridge. Holdsworth has since gone on to manage Newport County, Chelmsford City and Brentwood Town after retiring.

Steinsson is the first name in the top-five, with the former Bolton Wanderers defender signing for the club for a fee of £4.73million.

He arrived from Dutch side AZ Alkmaar, and went on to make 138 appearances in total for the club, before departing after four years at the University of Bolton Stadium.

Steinsson went on to sign for Turkish side Kayserispor, before calling time on his playing career in 2013 after one year with them.

He is currently Everton's Chief European Scout, where he scouts players in the lower leagues for the Premier League side, who are currently sat eighth in the top-flight standings.

Cahill is next up, with the former Bolton Wanderers and England defender signing for Bolton for a fee of £5.40million.

He caught the eye with some impressive showings for Aston Villa, which prompted the Trotters to make their move for him in 2008.

Cahill went on to make 147 appearances in all competitions for Bolton, before leaving the club in 2012, as he moved to Chelsea.

Cahill won two Premier League titles with the Blues, before moving to Crystal Palace in 2019, which is where he's still playing his football to this day. The defender has made 14 senior appearances for the Eagles this term, as they look to finish this year's campaign strongly.

Fabrice Muamba is the first name in the top-three, with the former Bolton Wanderers midfielder signing for the club from Birmingham City for £5.76million.

The midfielder made 148 appearances for the Trotters in total, before retiring early from his playing career in August 2012, after he suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch against Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup.

After his retirement, Muamba was part of ITV's coverage of the 2013 African Cup of Nations, and has also graduated with a sports journalism degree in 2015.

Muamba is also a keen FIFA player, and can be seen regularly streaming to his social media followers.

Nicolas Anelka narrowly misses out on top spot on the list, with the French forward signing for Bolton for a fee of £10.80million.

He signed for the club from Turkish giants Fenerbahce, and scored 23 goals in 61 appearances for the Trotters whilst they were in the top-flight.

Anelka went on to sign for Chelsea in 2008, and spent four years with the Blues at Stamford Bridge. A short stay with Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua was followed by a move to West Brom.

But he finished his playing career with Indian side Mumbai City in 2015. He was Lille's youth forward coach as of 2018.

Johan Elmander is in at number one, with the former Bolton Wanderers forward signing for the club for a fee of £11.34million.

He arrived from French side Toulouse, and went on to score 22 goals for the club in total whilst they were playing their football in the Premier League.

Elmander scored some important goals in his time with Bolton, with his impressive solo goal against Wolves being one of the most memorable.

He departed in favour of a move to Turkish giants Galatasaray. After brief spells with Norwich City and Danish side Brøndby IF, Elmander called time on his playing career back in Sweden, after a short spell with Örgryte IS.
