Bolton Wanderers manager Keith Hill has revealed that the club are keen to tempt free-agent winger Ben Marshall to join the club on trial.

Marshall has been without a club since his release by newly-promoted Premier League side Norwich City at the end of last season, despite only moving to Carrow Road from Wolves the summer before.

The winger made just six appearances for the Canaries during the previous campaign, and spent the second half of last season on loan with Millwall, his second temporary spell with the Lions.

Bolton meanwhile are in need of additional numbers for their squad, following the radical overhaul brought about by the administration and subsequent takeover of the club by new owners over the summer, and Marshall in one player the club are now targeting.

Speaking about the prospect of bringing Marshall to the club, Wanderers boss Hill told the Bolton News: “We’re trying to encourage him to come into training with us.

“I have spoken to his representatives and we’d like the opportunity to have a look at him, and he can have a look at us. “He is currently without a club and he’s a very good player.

“With due respect we think he could benefit from taking a look at our club as much as we want to take a look at him.”

As well as Bolton, it is thought that League Two newcomers Salford City are also interested in a move for Marshall.

It has been a tough start to the campaign for Bolton, who are bottom of League One on minus nine points, following their 12 point deduction at the start of the campaign for entering into administration.

The Verdict

I think this would be a really good signing for Bolton.

Having spent most of his playing career so far in the Championship and League One, I don't think there can be any doubt that Marshall could fit in well at Bolton.

With Wanderers starting to show signs of promise following what was always going to be a difficult start to the season, the addition of a player such as Marshall would surely give them another boost in their quest to pull off the seemingly impossible and remain in League One for next season.

With Marshall still without a club despite being available on a free for several months now, I do think this is something worth considering for the winger as well, since at 28-years-old, he is unlikely to want to spend what ought to be the peak years of his career as a free agent.
