Bolton Wanderers have signed Clayton Donaldson on a short-term deal, the club's official website has confirmed.

Donaldson pens a one-year deal with Bolton, joining the club on a free transfer after he was released by Sheffield United.

The experienced 34-year-old striker played 29 times for Sheffield United during his one year stay at Bramall Lane, netting five times.

Prior to that, he spent four seasons in the Championship leading the line for Birmingham City and he scored 33 times in over 100 games for the Blues.

Donaldson started his senior career at Hull City after spending time as a schoolboy at his local club Bradford City and he has gone on to represent York City, Hibernian, Crewe Alexandra and Brentford.

The 10-cap Jamaica international has now signed up for the 2018/18 season at Bolton and Trotters fans will be hoping he adds some much-needed firepower to the attack which has been lacking since Gary Madine departed for Cardiff City in January.

The Verdict

Donaldson might not be the most spectacular signing for Bolton but to gain his experience and power on a free is not bad business.

The veteran forward is likely to be an impact substitute and his physical presence is a nightmare for Championship defenders, especially late on in a game if Bolton are chasing an equaliser or trying to preserve a lead.

Donaldson will play second fiddle to Adam le Fondre and perhaps another forward if they can sign one but he is a good squad option to have.
