Bolton Wanderers are closing in on a deal to take Charlton Athletic striker Josh Magennis to the Macron Stadium, according to the Belfast Telegraph.

The fee for the 30-year old is thought to be £200,000, with Lee Bowyer already resigned to losing his top striker following comments made last week.

“I know there has been an agreement, (Magennis) went there yesterday for what looks like a medical and to agree terms,” Bowyer said on Saturday.

The Northern Irish striker bagged 10 goals for Charlton last season as they fought their way into the League One play-off race under former Leeds United star Bowyer.

Having started out at Cardiff, Magennis spent time with Aberdeen where he struck just 12 times in 123 outings. 20 goals in 84 appearances for Kilmarnock convinced Charlton to secure his services. He's now scored 20 goals in two seasons at the Valley, and has represented his country on 38 occasions, scoring four times.

Phil Parkinson's Bolton only avoided the drop to League One courtesy of a final day reprieve and had struggled for goals after selling Gary Madine to Cardiff in January.

The Verdict

On the face of it, this seems like a good deal all round. £200,000 for a 30-year old is good business and 10 goals in a season is an average return for a striker at any level.

Bolton haven't picked up the cream of League One talent here, but there's obviously something they see in him that he hasn't shown in his previous ten years as a professional. In total, Magennis has 53 goals from 320 senior appearances.

I think the move demonstrates that Bolton are in for yet another rough season.
