Former Sheffield Wednesday forward Elias Kachunga has put pen to paper on a two-year deal at League One side Bolton Wanderers following his release from Hillsborough this summer, according to Football Insider.

Following their relegation from the Championship, Kachunga was one of numerous Owls who officially departed the South Yorkshire side at the start of last month on the expiration of his current deal.

He first arrived in England back in 2016 when then-David Wagner's Huddersfield Town agreed a loan deal with FC Ingolstadt 04 to bring him to the John Smith's Stadium.

After a successful first campaign, winning promotion to the Premier League after the Terriers' play-off final win against Reading and recording 16 Championship goal contributions, he remained with the club after securing a putting pen to paper on a permanent move in the March of that season.

He continued to be a semi-regular player for the next three years before being released - and linked up with Huddersfield's neighbours Sheffield Wednesday last year after sealing a one-year contract with the Owls.

However, he failed to make a real impact at Hillsborough and bagged himself just two assists in 27 appearances, failing to earn himself a new contract.

The 29-year-old, who can play as a centre-forward or on the wing, has seemingly been given another chance in England though and will be hoping to help Bolton Wanderers establish themselves as a third-tier side following their promotion last season.

The Verdict:

With Xavier Amaechi sustaining a severe injury, it was clear they needed a replacement for the promising 20-year-old and they have managed to pull off a coup with this signing.

He may not have impressed for Sheffield Wednesday but at 29, his best days certainly aren't past him yet and the wealth of experience he has in the Premier League and Championship should help to elevate Ian Evatt's side to better things.

Wanderers may have made a flurry of promising signings this summer, but they shouldn't underestimate the challenge they face considering how many teams are likely to be competing at the top of the third tier during the 2021/22 season.

Competing near the top might not be their aim just yet, but how competitive it will be in the top half of the League One table will only push them down if they don't rise to the occasion.

But with Elias Kachunga, they have a game-changer in their ranks if he can get into good form. Whether he can return to the form he showed in his Huddersfield Town days remains to be seen but on a free, it's definitely worth the small gamble to bring him to the University of Bolton Stadium.
