The Bristol Post are reporting that Aaron Wilbraham is close to signing for Bolton Wanderers.

Aaron Wilbraham has been training with Bolton for the past couple of days and is set to sign a contract with the newly promoted Championship club.

The veteran striker is on the verge of leaving Bristol City after three seasons with the club.

In his first year at Bristol City, the 6ft 3in target man helped the Robins win promotion back to the Championship with 21 goals in all competitions.

Wilbraham has played a lesser role in the last two seasons.

In 2015/16, he played second fiddle to Jonathan Kodjia and then last season he was behind Tammy Abraham in the pecking order.

With Famara Diedhiou, Matty Taylor, Milan Djuric and Gustav Engvall on their books, as well as Lee Johnson looking to add another striker to his ranks, Wilbraham was becoming an increasingly peripheral figure at Ashton Gate.

Therefore, the 37-year-old is looking to complete his move to Bolton Wanderers.

At Bolton, he will compete with Adam le Fondre, Adam Armstrong and Gary Madine for the striker slots.

With one year left on his current deal with Bristol City, it is expected that this will be cancelled by mutual consent so that he is able to move to Bolton on a free transfer.

The Verdict

Aaron Wilbraham is the archetypal journeyman striker: his career has spanned twenty years and nine clubs.

The 37-year-old is obviously not the player he once was but he could be a useful addition for Bolton Wanderers on a free transfer.

I'm presuming that Gary Madine will start most games with Wilbraham being used as the squad rotation target man when the Trotters need to rest Madine.
