Bolton Wanderers are reportedly interested in signing former Derby County defender Raul Albentosa, according to the printed edition of the Sun (12th February, page 53).

The 30-year-old centre back is currently a free agent after being released by Spanish side Deportivo La Coruna. He last played for Gimnastic on loan in the second division, but had his contract terminated on his return to his parent club.

He joined Derby County from Eibar in in the January transfer window four years ago, making his debut against Chesterfield in the FA Cup. He failed to settle in the East Midlands, making just eight Championship appearances before returning to Spain six months later with Malaga.

Bolton are currently in serious relegation trouble, having plunged to second from bottom in the Championship, four points adrift of safety. They've won just once in the Championship since the end of September and have conceded 47 times in 31 matches.

They're surely hoping the introduction of the 6ft 4in free agent can help shore up their leaky defence and spur them on to a survival bid.

The Verdict

Bolton have serious financial woes, having been forced to return Christian Doidge to Forest Green and having the threat of a winding up order looming over them.

They're looking for bargain basement players, low on outlay but hopefully high on return. Albentosa's previous experience doesn't scream high return, but he'll certainly add something to the current Bolton squad.
