Bolton Wanderers are interested in a deal for former midfielder Jay Spearing, according to reports from Daily Mirror (print edition; September 5th).

The Liverpool academy graduate is a free agent following the expiration of his contract with the Trotters in June, but boss Phil Parkinson is now said to be considering offering new terms to the holding midfielder.

The 28-year-old joined the Trotters from boyhood club Liverpool in 2013 following a successful loan spell with the club, and went on to make 125 league appearances at the Macron Stadium, scoring eight times.

Spearing has a plethora of experience at the highest level of English football, having made 30 first team appearances in the Premier League for Liverpool, as well as spending time in the Championship and League One with Bolton, Leicester and Blackburn.

The player will surely welcome a return to Bolton, having failed to secure a deal with a new club.

Parkinson is expected to be equally as keen to get a deal done, with the club lying bottom of the Championship pile, following the first five rounds of action.

The Verdict: Bolton and Spearing failed to agree terms over a new contract last season, with the player departing the club in search of fresh opportunities, following Bolton’s promotion from League One.

A new venture has failed to materialise however, and returning to Bolton surely makes sense for all parties involved.

Spearing is keen to get back into football having spent the summer away from the professional game, and Parkinson will be keen to add further options, with his side struggling at the foot of the table.

The player will add solidity and fight to the middle of the park, something the club have lacked in recent weeks, so expect a deal to be tied up very soon.

Bolton fans, would you welcome Spearing back to the club?
