Bolton Wanderers are on the brink of signing Will Buckley on a free transfer, according to The Bolton News.

Will Buckley was recently released by Sunderland and will officially become a free-agent when his contract expires at the end of June.

There has been Championship interest in the attacker but Bolton Wanderers are closing in on the versatile forward.

Will Buckley plays predominantly as a winger but can operate as a striker too.

The 27-year-old endured a career-hampering spell at Sunderland.

In his three years with the Black Cats, Buckley only managed to play 24 games and he was subsequently farmed out on loan to Leeds United, Birmingham City and Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship.

The former Rochdale academy product has plenty of experience in the second tier, though.

After leaving Rochdale in January 2010, Buckley spent a year and a half at Watford in the Championship before being snapped up by Brighton and Hove Albion.

In his three years with Brighton, Buckley racked up over 100 appearances for the Seagulls and impressed with some good performances on the wings.

He reunited with Gus Poyet at Sunderland to realise his Premier League dream in 2014 but it never worked out for him at the Stadium of Light.

He was unsurprisingly released this summer and now looks set to join newly promoted Bolton for their Championship campaign.
