Bolton Wanderers’ chairman Ken Anderson has hinted the Championship club will no longer pursue the signature of Charlie Wyke, according to Bolton’s official website.

Bradford City’s striker has been courting interest from Sunderland and the Trotters this summer with a move from Valley Parade looking inevitable.

In recent days, however, Wyke had had a slight injury setback, picking up a knock to his knee.

The Bolton supremo indicated to the club’s official website that they have had bids turned down for two different strikers, and admitted that both deals have stalled.

Wyke is expected to be one of the player’s manager Phil Parkinson was after but the player now injured, a deal is less likely to happen.

Anderson told the Bolton official site: “There has been speculation within the media and social media about our pursuit for strikers, and I can confirm that we have made six-figure bids for two different players.”

He added:“At this stage, we will not be making any further offers on these players and we shall consequently widen our search.

“Despite whatever pressure is placed upon us, if we miss out on players or get outbid, I will not deviate from the valuation we have put on the player whom we have targeted.”

The other player thought to be subject of an offer is Ipswich’s Joe Garner who Bolton were also believed to have had interest in.

The Verdict

Missing out on two players because the valuation Bolton have differed from that of the player’s parents club’s is a blow.

Wanderers lacked goals last year scoring 39, the second worst in the division, only one better off that Birmingham and relegated Burton Albion.

Their need for firepower is more significant than others, and their resources are stretched pretty thin.

The valuations the clubs might have compared to what Bolton can offer will be substantially different as Bolton are still in the midst of financial uncertainty.

It looks like Bolton could be risking it all to stay in the Championship again next term and build on consolidation.

It doesn’t bear thinking about what could happen, should the Lancashire side drop down a division once more.
