Bolton Wanderers are a club in disarray, with a decimated squad and an uncertain future, but they're taking a look at two experienced trialists as they begin rebuilding.

As reported by Alan Nixon, they're giving former Preston North End midfielder Ben Pringle a chance to impress, as well as former Blackburn midfielder Craig Conway.

The Trotters lost against York City in a friendly yesterday and with the season rapidly approaching they need to recruit players quickly. 30-year-old Pringle was last seen in League Two, on loan with Tranmere Rovers as they earned promotion via the play-offs.

He's also had loan spells with Grimsby Town and Oldham in recent seasons and counts Derby, Rotherham and Fulham as former employers. His most consistent spell came with the Millers where he racked up 150 appearances during successive promotions under Steve Evans.

34-year-old Conway has played for Ayr, Dundee and Cardiff before moving to Blackburn and has seven caps to his name for Scotland. He admitted in May he would be leaving Rovers after making 200 appearances for them.

The Verdict

Bolton have to rebuild and although neither player would appear to be top six material in League One, they would bring some experience which I suspect the Trotters will need.

They're going to have a youthful side on the opening day, certainly one that hasn't spent a lot of time together and they'll have to have a leader or two in the pack somewhere.

Of the two, Craig Conway is the player I think would be the biggest addition. He's played lots of football for Blackburn Rovers and if he sat deeper in midfielder he could organise without having too much asked of his 34-year-old legs.

It's going to be a tough season for Bolton fans but this news is at least a very thin silver lining on the huge rain cloud hanging over them right now.
