Bolton Wanderers are close to a deal to bring Charlton striker Josh Magennis to the Macron Stadium, according to London News Online.

The Championship side had been interested in Bradford’s Charlie Wyke, but have since cast their eye further afield and moved onto new targets.

The 27-year-old was targeted by Bolton back in the January transfer window, and now with the club's agreeing a fee, the player is one step closer to a move to the Lancashire side.

Magennis had been a target for Peterborough United, who are looking for a replacement for Jack Marriott, who moved to Derby County this week.

Charlton’s striker played 44 times for the Addicks, scoring 10 goals in a season that ended in a play-off semi-final defeat against Shrewsbury Town.

This news comes only a day after Lee Bowyer was expecting Peterborough to bid again for the striker.

The two clubs will battle it out for the 27-year-old's signature, with Bolton looking the likelier destination.

Magennis is a Northern Ireland international and has earned 37 caps for his country, scoring four goals.

The Verdict

Bolton had been after Magennis previously but saw their advances rebuffed back in January.

Peterborough had been interested too, but it looks like the striker is heading to the Macron Stadium.

One advantage Wanderers have over Peterborough is Championship football.

The lure of playing at a higher level could be too much for the Northern Irishman to resist.

With the Charlie Wyke deal seemingly dead in the water, Bolton needed an alternative.

It is a blow to Peterborough, however, who still need to replace Jack Marriott after his move to Derby earlier this week.
