Bolton Wanderers striker Gary Madine wants a new deal with the Championship side after the club rejected several approaches for him this window.

The former Sheffield Wednesday man has been key to the Trotters this season, scoring ten goals and assisting a further five.

He added his latest on Saturday, opening the scoring in the 1-1 draw with Ipswich. The result leaves Wanderers in 20th position and one point ahead of the relegation zone.

That strike means he has been directly involved in 15 of the 26 goals that Bolton have scored this season.

Therefore, it was perhaps unsurprising to see many Championship rivals try to sign Madine during the current window, with high-flying Cardiff City reported to have made several bids to the Trotters.

However, boss Phil Parkinson knows that Madine is crucial to Bolton’s survival chances and the club turned down the offers.

And, according to journalist Alan Nixon, the striker is now asking for a new contract to reflect his value at the club.

Madine signed a contract extension with the club in May last year that would keep him at the Macron Stadium until 2019 following promotion to the Championship.

The Verdict

Bolton should certainly grant Madine’s wish of a new contract and they should look to make it happen as soon as possible.

With his current deal expiring at the end of next season, they would probably have to cash in on the player in the summer, but a longer deal would give them more power in the market.

Realistically, it might include clauses that allow him to leave anyway, especially if they go down, but Madine hasn’t pushed for a move now and deserves to be rewarded with a new deal that reflects his status as their best player.
