If Rotherham United had kept hold of 6”2 former Manchester United Tom Thorpe last summer instead of loaning him to League One Bolton, then perhaps things could have been different for the Millers.
While Thorpe helped guide Bolton back to the Championship, his parent club plunged back into League One after mustering only 23 points in 46 games and conceding an incredible 98 times.
The United academy graduate is set to leave Rotherham on a free this summer following their relegation, and will hope to compete at Championship level next season.
After putting in a string of impressive performances alongside David Wheater last season, Bolton should swoop to secure Thorpe on a free transfer, and ensure the 24-year-old is tied to the club for at least another season.
Thorpe showed great promise while making strides through the academy at Old Trafford, and was deemed good enough to make a first team appearance for the Red Devils.
Although he eventually failed to make the grade at the top of the Premier League, Thorpe is a solid Championship defender and will continue to develop at such a tender age.
Bolton know exactly what Thorpe is about, and manager Phil Parkinson is likely to make a move for the young man this summer.
Thoughts, Bolton fans?
