Bolton Wanderers defender David Wheater has praised fans for all the support they have provided the team with this season, and urged them to turn out in their droves when the Trotters entertain Sheffield Wednesday at the Macron Stadium on Saturday.

The experienced defender shared his words with the club’s official website, and said that the players owe the fans a performance following their abysmal start to the new campaign.

Bolton lie bottom of the table having picked up just two points from their opening eleven fixtures, scoring just four goals in the process.

Two of the goals came in the opening day defeat to Leeds United, and manager Phil Parkinson will certainly be feeling the pressure at this early stage of the season.

Wheater knows the score, and said: “Our fans have shown us great support this season and we as players owe it to them to put in a performance to try and get a result.

“There is going to be a big crowd on Saturday and we want to make sure that all the Bolton fans go home happy.”

The Verdict

Bolton have been shocking this season, and following their early showing in the league, they don’t look capable of staying up this season.

It is going to be a tough season for the men from the north west, and Wheater knows that the support of the fans could be a determining factor in whether Bolton survive the drop of not.

The season is very early and there is plenty of time for Parkinson’s men to turn things round, but a tough date with Sheffield Wednesday will not be a fixture the fans or the players relish.
