Bolton line up swoop for free agent with international experience

The transfer window may have closed but Bolton Wanderers are still on the hunt for firepower having lost top scorer Gary Madine last month to Cardiff City, who they face tonight in South Wales.

Their search for a striker has seen them turn to experienced frontman Victor Anichebe, who was at Sunderland last season, according to the Birmingham Mail.

The former Everton and West Brom striker is out of contract having been released by Beijing Enterprises following a brief foray into the Chinese Super League, which means that Wanderers could sign him outside of the transfer window.

The 29-year-old has one goal from 11 appearances for Nigeria and Whites boss Phil Parkinson clearly feels that the striker has something to add to his side, who have lost just one of their past five matches.

The Verdict

I can’t believe Anichebe is still 29! It feels like he has been around forever. He is a physical presence and he could replace Madine as the battering ram up front for Bolton, but I wouldn’t expect him to be anywhere near as prolific.

His experience means that he is a tempting option but Adam Le Fondre and Zach Clough are showing that an approach based around smaller, more technical players can work at the Macron and going for Anichebe feels like something of a step back.
