Bolton, Ipswich, and Reading to lock horns in pursuit of talented 24-year-old midfielder

The Championship trio of Bolton Wanderers, Ipswich Town, and Reading are considering a summer move for out-of-contract star Ryan Tunnicliffe, according to HITC.

The 24-year-old midfielder left second tier side Fulham at the end of June at the expiration of his contract, which brought the curtain down on a three-year stint in the capital, in which time he managed 66 appearances for the Cottagers, netting on two occasions.

However, his spell with the club was intertwined with loan moves to Wigan and Blackburn, and with just seven Championship appearances last season for Slavisa Jokanovic’s side, it was clear that he was not in the former Watford chief’s plans.

And as such they didn’t agree a contract extension last month, yet Tunnicliffe may well be staying in the second tier as Phil Parkinson’s Bolton, Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich, and Jaap Stam’s Reading are all reportedly interested in the midfielder.

Bolton will be returning to the Championship next season following automatic promotion from League One, and as with any promotion reinforcements will be needed to give them a good chance of retaining their top-flight status in ten months’ time.

While McCarthy’s Ipswich finished just two points above the drop last term and will need to bolster the ranks ahead of next season, and Reading were defeated in the play-off final at Wembley, and with Danny Williams having left the club for the team that won that clash, Huddersfield, Royals chief Stam will be looking to strengthen his midfield options this summer.

And although things petered out somewhat at Fulham, there’s little doubting Tunnicliffe’s quality in the midfield area, and would thus strengthen any of the aforementioned trio were they able to get a deal done for the former Manchester United man this summer.
