Bolton Wanderers moved one step closer to relegation to League One on Tuesday night as they lost 2-0 to Middlesbrough at the University of Bolton Stadium.

Ashley Fletcher notched both goals in the first half to help Tony Pulis to a badly needed win and their first in six matches.

But it left Bolton now needing to make up an eight point gap in their final five matches of the season to have any hope of surviving.

The Lancashire club have been plagued with off-field issues throughout this season with players and staff going unpaid on more than one occasion.

And after the defeat last night, manager Phil Parkinson offered an insight into the effect that has had on the morale of the players, telling the Bolton News that everyone is "low".

It has undoubtedly been an immensely tiring season for the fans, but how will this latest update be viewed by them?

Whilst there has been plenty of news regarding players not being paid and the sale of the club, little has come out about the effect this has had on the players, aside from speculation.

So this latest update will add another dimension to proceedings and will make the fans empathise with the players even more than they have already been.

As Parkinson says, yes they are footballers, but they are still doing a job that they should be paid for.
