Bolton boss issues verdict on Danny Cowley situation at Portsmouth

Ahead of their games against Portsmouth, Bolton Wanderers boss Ian Evatt has admitted that Danny and Nicky Cowley would have learnt lessons from their time at Huddersfield Town.

Evatt and his Wanderers side visit Fratton Park on Saturday with the former Barrow manager looking to get three points but understands it will be a tough test despite Portsmouth’s struggles this season.

Cowley has been in charge of Portsmouth since March 2021 and finished 8th last season. But Evatt believes success isn’t too far away for the former Huddersfield manager and has predicted success in the near future.

He told Manchester Evening News: “Kenny [Jackett] obviously did a very good job at Portsmouth for a long time and [Cowley] is probably just building. Overnight success is very difficult and I’m very fortunate that in my short career as a manager I’ve had two promotions.

“But there are going to be times where you need to rebuild and it might be that you have to finish mid-table, even though I can’t stand that. Mediocrity eats me alive but you can’t constantly be promoted – it just doesn’t work like that.

“Sometimes you have to build for the future and I’m sure Danny is doing that at Portsmouth. It’s been a rough start, he’s had inconsistencies as have we.”

Which club do these 28 former Portsmouth players now play for?

Gareth Evans?

Portsmouth currently sit 16th in the table and a win could see them rise to 12th if results go their way.

For their part, Bolton go into the game 13th in the League One table, five points adrift of the play-offs.

The Verdict

The struggles at Portsmouth this season have been and the inability to build any consistent form has held them back.

But Evatt is right in pointing out that success isn’t achieved overnight and with Jackett leaving last March after four years in charge, a transition was always to be expected.

The Cowley’s have achieved success wherever they’ve been and having kept Huddersfield in the Championship should be viewed as a success rather than a failure and for that reason, it’s important to trust the process under the Cowley’s.

If Portsmouth do, then things could start to look up for those at Fratton Park again, in the not too distant future.
