With Birmingham City on a four match winless run, the last thing manager Lee Bowyer needed was to lose one of his key players just days into the January transfer window.

But that is exactly what has happened - although it's through no fault of anyone connected to the club as Dion Sanderson has headed back to Wolverhampton Wanderers after just half a season at St. Andrew's.

The defender signed in the summer on a loan deal for the whole of the 2021-22 campaign, but like most transfer of that kind it included a break clause mid-season where Wolves could opt to take Sanderson back.

And with incomings expected to be sparse at Molineux this month, Sanderson has been required back at his parent club, bringing his time at the Blues to a premature end.

Bowyer has moved quickly though and perhaps with the help of current Birmingham loanee Tahith Chong he has been able to snap up a replacement in Man United defender Teden Mengi.

The 19-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Derby County but was restricted to just nine appearances after picking up an injury.

Mengi will continue his development in the Midlands though and Birmingham fans have been reacting to the news of his arrival.
