Sheffield United defender John Egan arrived at the club in the summer and would have been under some pressure to justify the hefty fee the club paid to bring him to Bramall Lane.
But the central defender certainly has lived up to the price tag and has played a crucial part in the Blades’ promotion push this season, and they will be keen to continue their good run of form heading into the weekends set of fixtures.
Chris Wilder’s side host bitter rivals Sheffield Wednesday in front of the Sky Sports cameras on Friday evening, and Egan has revealed that he is aware of the magnitude of claiming the bragging rights.
‘I’ve definitely got a feel for how big this game is. I’ve got that from our fans. You are playing for their club and so you want to represent it in the right way. Because we’re trying to put on a performance for them’, Egan admitted in a recent press conference.
‘The manager makes you aware of how big the club is and the fans really get behind you,’
‘We have seen that from day one and they get behind us every time we play at home and away.
The Republic of Ireland international was full of praise for the clubs supporters and revealed the one task they set for him when he arrived at the club from Brentford in the summer.
‘The fans are fantastic and all we are trying to do is go out and repay them in every game. On my first day here I had them telling me ‘make sure you win the derby.’
Egan has certainly played his part in Chris Wilder’s side’s impressive start to this year’s campaign and if they are to challenge for promotion to the Premier League this season, they will need to be winning games like this.
Sheffield Wednesday are on a poor run of form and confidence is likely to be low heading into their game on Friday, so the Blades should be taking full advantage of that and should be sweeping them aside with no problem at all.
