Blackpool have completed the signing of goalkeeper Chris Maxwell on a deal until the end of the season, the League One side have confirmed.

Maxwell spent the first of this season on loan with Hibernian, making 17 appearances in all competitions for the Scottish Premiership side, before being recalled by parent club Preston North End earlier this month.

It was then announced that following his return to Deepdale, Maxwell had had his contract with the club terminated by mutual consent, paving the way for the 29-year-old to make this move to Bloomfield Road.

In total, Maxwell made 83 appearances for Preston, having been signed for the club by current Blackpool manager Simon Grayson back in the summer of 2016.

Speaking to Blackpool's official website following confirmation of the move, Maxwell said: “I’m really excited (about the move). When the opportunity arose to work under Simon Grayson again, it was something that jumped out at me to be honest.

"I’m really glad it’s finally done and I’m looking forward to my time here.”

Blackpool are currently 15th in the League One table, seven points adrift of the play-off places, following a run of eight games without a win in all competitions.

The Seasiders are next in action on Tuesday night, when they travel to Adams Park to face Wycombe Wanderers, in a game in which Maxwell could make his debut for the club.

The Verdict

This looks to be a decent signing for Blackpool.

With this season's first-choice goalkeeper, Jak Alnwick, out for some time yet with a broken arm, it did seem as though the Seasiders needed to bring in someone else between the posts.

In Maxwell, they have got someone with plenty of proven experience and ability to fill that role, with the fact he had been released by Preston before the move reducing the financial cost of this move.

It will be interesting to see if Maxwell is capable to do enough to secure a longer-term deal at Bloomfield Road beyond the end of this season, and that will surely be decided by how he performs in the coming weeks, as Blackpool look to reignite that push for a play-off place.
