It seems to have become a general rule of thumb around Blackburn Rovers in the past two years that if Bradley Dack plays well, then so do the team, but that if he doesn't, then neither does the side that he is a part of.

Having top-scored in each of his two full season at Ewood Park since his move from Gillingham in the summer of 2017, with 36 goals in all competitions in two years - not to mention 19 assists - it is clear to see why Dack is so important to this current Blackburn side.

With that in mind, it is perhaps also no surprise that Dack's most challenging run of form in his first season in the Championship last year, also coincided with a run that saw Tony Mowbray's side take just four points from 11 games.

Even for a player such as Dack, it is inevitable that such a run is going to come along once in a season, and so Blackburn will surely need to address that reliance on him if they are to push up the Championship table in the years to come.

Now it seems, that despite the transfer window being closed to Rovers for well over a month, that is something they are close to doing.

According to recent reports from German website FussballTransfers, the Lancashire side are in talks to agree a deal to sign attacking midfielder Lewis Holtby, who is a free agent after leaving Hamburg at the end of last season.

If they were to do that, it would surely go some way to relieving the pressure on Dack.

Given Holtby's experience in the top flight of both German and English football, with the likes of Schalke, Tottenham and Hamburg, among others, it does seem as though the 28-year-old has the potential to make an impact in the Championship, particularly when you look at some of the flashes he showed during his time at Spurs.

Indeed, if Rovers were to bring in a player such as Holtby, it could even release the shackles on Dack completely, allowing him to try things he perhaps wouldn't ordinarily try, in the knowledge that someone such as Holtby is there to provide a similar, game-changing spark for Rovers if he is unable to do that.

It wouldn't only be Dack himself this would offer a sense of security for, but also the club as a whole.

Right now there seems to be an inevitability that each transfer with bring with it rumours linking Dack with a step up to the Premier League, with West Ham and Crystal Palace among those to be credited with an interest in the 25-year-old in the lead up to the most recent summer transfer window.

With the months counting down on Dack's contract at Ewood Park - which is currently set to expire at the end of next season - and the interest in Championship players from the Premier League seemingly growing, Blackburn may soon have to face up to life without their talisman if the situation does not change quickly.

As a result, having someone such as Holtby at the club to step into the hole that Dack would leave, it would at least ease some of the immediate concern about losing their talisman.

Add to that the fact that Blackburn will look to make sure they do at least receive a fee for Dack, and that they would be bringing in a potential replacement for him on a free in the form of Holtby, it would mean that there would then be funds at their disposal to reinvest fully in their squad, without having to rush to bring in an alternative for the former Gillingham man.

While Blackburn will surely not want to lose Dack anytime soon, the recruitment of someone such as Holtby would at least clearly see them better prepared for such an eventuality than they arguably are at this moment in time.

It also seems as though it would relieve some of the pressure on Dack to be the man who makes the difference for Rovers week in week out, and that could even see then move into a position, were their undisputed main man wouldn't even want, or need, to leave Ewood Park anyway.
