Blackburn Rovers right-back Callum Brittain has admitted he pushed for a move to Ewood Park after finding out the club wanted to pursue a move for him, speaking candidly to Lancs Live.

The 24-year-old still had one year left on his contract at Oakwell but with the Tykes being relegated in the latter stages of last term, he was one of the favourites to move on after performing reasonably well for his former side at times during 2021/22.

With the likes of Cauley Woodrow and Carlton Morris already moving on to Luton Town, it was unclear whether Michael Duff's side were prepared to cash in on another key player with Callum Styles also tipped by some to seal a move away from Oakwell.

However, Jon Dahl Tomasson's side did enough to seal this deal, with the right-sided player becoming the Lancashire side's first summer signing after a period of considerable change at Ewood Park.

His arrival was much-needed considering Ryan Nyambe's departure, with the Namibia international failing to agree fresh terms in Lancashire before linking up with promoted side Wigan Athletic earlier this month.

And Brittain's move to Ewood Park is a transfer the player was just as desperate to get over the line as Rovers were.

Asked whether he was aware of prior interest from the club, he said to Lancs Live: "Yeah a little bit in January but not much as when it intensified in the last couple of weeks.

"I knew they wanted to do something and I pushed it as much as I could.

"It looks a very challenging league this year with the likes of Sunderland and Wigan coming up. Teams that have been in and around the Championship before, so I can imagine it's going to be just as intense and gruelling, but I'm ready for it."

The Verdict:

Considering he was set to ply his trade in the third tier, it's no surprise Brittain wanted to secure a move away because at 24, he will be hoping to continue developing and potentially ply his trade in the Premier League in the future.

Nearly getting there with the Tykes towards the end of the 2020/21 season, he will certainly have an appetite to play at an even higher level and will get there if he can continue to be an influential figure in the EFL.

This is a particularly good move for the player considering he's likely to be one of the first names on the teamsheet, with Nyambe leaving a big hole on the right-hand side at Ewood Park.

Joe Rankin-Costello may be another option - but he's unlikely to force his way past Brittain in the pecking order at this stage - especially considering how much of a threat the latter can be when going forward.

Often popping up well on the edge of the box for the Tykes, he will be looking to get in similar positions for Rovers during 2022/23 and beyond, but will need to continue maximising his performance levels to give him the best chance of retaining his spot in the starting lineup for the coming years.
