Blackburn Rovers are closing in on the signing of Adam Armstrong from Newcastle United, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

Armstrong starred for Blackburn on loan last season and it is unclear at the moment whether he would be returning to the club on a permanent deal or another loan.

Nixon tweeted: "Long pursuit of Adam Armstrong about to come to a happy ending."

The 21-year-old spent the first half of last season on loan at Bolton Wanderers but struggled to make an impact and was often played out wide on the right.

In January, he decided to drop down a division and join Blackburn, where he was reunited with Tony Mowbray - the manager who oversaw the striker's 20-goal season on loan at Coventry City.

Armstrong's chances of playing at Newcastle look increasingly slim so he is likely to head back to Ewood Park this summer, bolstering Mowbray's attacking options.

The England under-21 international recently helped his country win the Toulon Tournament and he will be looking to impress in the Championship.

The Verdict

Armstrong's best spells of his career have come under Mowbray so this move makes sense.

At Blackburn last season, he netted 9 goals in 17 starts and with a full season under his belt, he could become a top goal scorer in the Championship.

Armstrong offers something different; tireless running, blistering pace and an eye for goal.
