Championship high-flyers Blackburn Rovers are set to re-ignite their summer transfer interest in Sheffield United forward Oliver Burke, per Alan Nixon of The Sun.

Tony Mowbray's side are serious threats to the current top two of AFC Bournemouth and Fulham but could be set for a busy month with several key players having contracts that are set to expire this summer.

Added to that there is serious interest in Ben Brereton Diaz and with Leeds loanee Ian Poveda picking up a long-term ankle injury against Bristol City in November, a space for a temporary transfer at Ewood Park may have opened up.

Rovers were interested in Scotland international Burke on deadline day in August, but they left it too late to complete a deal, per LancsLive.

Burke headed to Bramall Lane in a swap deal with Callum Robinson last summer and made 25 appearances for the Blades in the Premier League.

Under both Slavisa Jokanovic and now Paul Heckingbottom this season though Burke's game-time has been less frequent, having not appeared in the league since the loss to West Brom all the way back in August.

United are willing to sanction either a permanent or loan deal for the 24-year-old this month, with Rovers said to be looking at the latter.

The Verdict

There was once upon a time where Burke was one of the hottest prospects in English football before he secured a move from Nottingham Forest to RB Leipzig.

Things did derail at some point though and he's never quite been able to get his career back on track - even though he did feature a bit in the top flight last season.

If Blackburn were to secure a deal for the Scottish winger then he would be arriving at Ewood Park with not much match fitness, with his last appearance coming in the EFL Cup against Southampton in September.

Mowbray though has been able to unlock the potential of Brereton this season - he could potentially do the same with Burke.
