Harrison Reed is close to joining Blackburn Rovers on loan from Southampton, according to HITC Sport.

Blackburn are edging closer to completing the double signing of Reed and free agent midfielder Jack Rodwell, who was most recently at Sunderland.

Reed spent last season on loan at Norwich City, playing 43 games in total.

Predominantly a central midfielder, the 23-year-old is also comfortable operating at right-back and he spent the latter part of last season ahead of Norwich captain Ivo Pinto in that position.

The former England youth international is down the pecking order at Southampton and the Premier League squad are ready to sanction another loan exit for their academy product.

A host of Championship clubs were reportedly interested in Reed, but Blackburn appear set to win the race for him and bolster their central midfield department.

The Verdict

With Reed available, I am surprised that Norwich did not come back in for him after an impressive season at Carrow Road.

But Blackburn know they are getting a young, versatile midfielder or full-back with a proven track record in the Premier League.

It keeps competition for places up and that is healthy as Rovers continue to push up the league table.
